Q: Why are my Brakes always on in Microsoft Flight Simulator?/ How do I set up my Rudder Pedals correctly in Microsoft Flight Simulator?
A. This is a small problem with the way in which the Rudder Pedals are configured by default in Microsoft Flight Simulator and can be sorted out quickly.
First, we need to make sure that the pedals are detected and set up in Flight Sim. Open Flight Sim and go to Settings - Controls. Go to the Control Axes tab and make sure that the Rudder Pedals are selected in the controller type box.
Now make sure that the Left and Right Toe Brakes on the device are assigned to the Left and Right Brake Axes in the events column. If they are assigned to something different, double click Brake (left axis), the 'Change Assignment' window will appear, then depress the left toe brake. The axis will appear in the white box and then click ok. Repeat for the Brake (right axis) event.
Also check that the Rudder Axis in the event column had been assigned to the slide motion of the pedals.
Now start up a flight, if the brakes and stay on when you press them, follow these steps;
Go to Settings - Controls - Calibration Tab (with rudder pedals selected in the controller type box). Make sure the null zone sliders for both brakes are set to minimum.
Start a flight. If the brakes are still on, go back to the main menu, settings, then controls, and back to the control axis tab. Check the box beside both brakes in the column 'reverse axis' and that should do it.
